Holiday Gifts for the Gardener

The holidays are here once again and so is holiday shopping! With a long list of gifts to buy, you may be looking for some inspiration to help quickly check a few gifts off your list. Good news–we’re here to help.

Whether your loved ones are summer gardeners, indoor plant enthusiasts, or have a year-round green thumb, we have gardening gift ideas for every plant lover on your list!

Gardening Books

When it comes to gifts for gardening, you can’t go wrong with a book. Depending on the recipient’s particular interest, you can find a multitude of niche books on vegetable gardens, house plants, topiaries, herbs, bulbs, succulents—the list goes on and on.

Newer gardeners might find it useful to have a book on plants and techniques that work well in their particular location.  Others might appreciate a book that explores new techniques.  Another good choice is a beautifully photographed coffee table book that bring their love of plants right into the living room.

New Tools

Consider any recent garden projects your loved one has mentioned. If they’ve been meaning to tackle something, there is almost certainly a tool to make the job easier.  The older gardener might appreciate a portable stool or kneeler to make their task a bit more comfortable.  A useful gadget for the avid landscaper is a tool that measures the amount of sunlight and moisture a garden location gets.  And a gadget that makes weeding easier will be a useful for any gardener.

Gardening Gloves

Writers can never have too many pens, artists can never have too many paintbrushes, and gardeners can never have too many pairs of gardening gloves. You can find gloves to fit any gardener’s taste: touch-screen friendly nitrile-coated gloves, fingerless gloves, ultra-thick gloves for heavy jobs, and extra-long cuff gloves for pruning roses and other prickly tasks.  The choices are almost endless.  So, find the perfect gardening gloves to spoil your loved one this holiday season.

A Sun Hat

The sun is key to a healthy garden but can wreak havoc on the body.  An attractive sun hat is a welcome, and practical gift for your loved one. They’ll likely use it every time they step outside, and they’ll have you to thank when their skin stays soft and youthful looking.

Containers

Garden container technology has come a long way in the last few years and a pot or planter is always a welcome gift, particularly for a patio or balcony gardener or a house plant enthusiast.  The newest vertical garden containers are beautiful vessels that hold dozens of herbs, succulents, or other plants in just a few square feet of floor space.  Some can even be hung on a wall.

Other unique garden container gifts are feather-light containers that look like cast concrete or stone, solar-illuminated containers, self-watering containers, stacked or cascading planters, and raised wooden planter boxes for flower or vegetable gardening.

A Subscription

If you want a home garden gift that keeps on giving, consider a subscription to a garden magazine. There are hundreds of publications, each with a unique focus or angle. Organic gardening, advanced gardening, landscaping, and urban gardening all have publications that your loved ones can enjoy. Plus, with an edition appearing monthly, they’ll think of you long after the holiday decorations have been taken down.

A Bee House

Another thoughtful gift for the gardener in your life is a backyard bee habitat. You don’t have to be a hardcore apiarist to help out these important pollinators by providing a house for them. And there’s an extra bonus–many of them double as attractive garden décor!

These structures give bees a much-needed place to rest and get a drink while giving them ample reason to do their good work in the surrounding garden. The result is healthier pollinators and a lusher landscape. Everyone wins!

A Composter

Composted soil is fantastic for plants, but it can be expensive to buy in stores. Home composters can help solve this problem by allowing home gardeners to create their own nutrient-rich compost from their compostable scraps. This keeps reusable material out of landfills and gives the gardener an easy, convenient way to recycle more waste.

Home composters come in a variety of sizes and price ranges. Kits for large stationary composters make a gift for the serious gardener who has plenty of room outside. There are also small composters that are compact enough to fit on a patio or balcony and some can even trap odors well enough to be used indoors.
